A kind of spin-off of my Strange Tears community at Livejournal, but dealing with 20th century art as well as that of the 19th century. Even some photography. You won't find any abstract art here though. There will be nudes though, so if you have a problem with that you've been warned.

Robert Bateman (1842-1922)
Robert Bateman (1842-1922) is a rather shadowy figure in late 19th century British art. He was a follower of Burne-Jones but was so completely forgotten that the painting usually regarded as his finest (The Pool of Bethesda) was not even recognised as being his work until 1965.

more on Charles Edward Hallé
Charles Edward Hallé (1846-1914) was an English painter influenced by both neo-classicism and pre-raphaelitism. In conjunction with Sir Edward Burne-Jones he founded the New Gallery in London in 1888. He was the son of the eminent conductor Sir Charles Hallé which perhaps explains why music seem to figure in many of his pictures.

Giuseppe de Nittis (1846-1884)
There’s a certain Impressionist influence visible in the works of Italian painter Giuseppe de Nittis (1846-1884). This is an influence always to be deplored but his paintings were to be seen at both the Salon and at Impressionist so he managed to keep a foot in both camps.

Arthur Hughes (1832-1915)
Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) doesn't seem to get quite as much attention as other Pre-Raphaelite painters such as Millais and Rossetti. But he did some rather wonderful paintings.
