Louis Icart (1888-1950), French artist better known for his drawings and etchings than his paintings. His work might not be especially profound but it’s lively and fun. It also serves as a reminder that many artists were quite happy to largely ignore the horrors and ugliness of modernism and managed to have highly successful careers while doing so. His pictures (and their continuing popularity) demonstrate that despite the dreary cultural stalinism of art critics and theorists the taste for beauty remains alive and well outside of art schools.
