Arthur Frank Mathews (1860-1945) was one of the founding figures of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. He was trained in Paris where he came under the influence of Whistler as well as academic painters such as Lefebvre and Symbolists such as Puvis de Chavannes. He spent most of his career in the United States, as an architect and designer as well as a painter.
